ELICIT – European Literacy and Citizenship Education

A European project for teachers, trainers and head teachers that developed tools for teaching a culture of European citizenship.

European literacy is the working knowledge of Europe past and present: a weave of philosophies, stories, cultures, myths and legends, religions, languages, geography, economics and geopolitics. It is our shared past and the future we have to build together.

ELICIT was aimed at teachers, trainers, head teachers and everyone involved in education. It set out to develop a sense of European citizenship built around a shared culture and shared values: the future of Europe and of Europeans, our idea of democracy, and a model of society based on living together.

That work goes through education, and therefore through teacher training. To this end, ELICIT produced:

  1. a competence framework for teaching a culture of European citizenship
  2. the European citizen’s portfolio
  3. a database of available resources
  4. a common European reference for teacher qualification

The project continued from 2014 to 2017 as ELICIT+.
